Riyadh Air opens the London-Heathrow corridor in 2026.

Insight N°038

21 May 2026

Riyadh Air, the Public Investment Fund-owned new full-service Saudi carrier, opened public ticket sales on 19 May 2026 for its inaugural commercial service. Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operations from King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh to London-Heathrow start in June and July 2026, with the launch date moved earlier from the previously announced 1 July.

The London-Heathrow opening is the first of an announced multi-route rollout that will extend across Europe, Asia and North America through 2027.

Why this matters beyond the headline route

Riyadh Air is the Public Investment Fund’s vehicle to build a new full-service global airline from the ground up. The operational build requires a wide vendor base: airframe MRO, engine MRO, in-flight entertainment, ground handling at the international stations, codeshare partners, distribution technology, loyalty programme partners, cabin product, catering, training and simulation, plus the cross-cutting airline IT. Each of those categories is in active vendor selection through 2026 and 2027.

Where international aviation services have credible positions

The aviation services base has depth across multiple Riyadh Air procurement categories. Air France-KLM groupe for codeshare and ground handling partnership. AFI KLM E&M for MRO. Safran for engine support contracts and cabin product (Safran Seats). Thales for in-flight entertainment and avionics. The airport services ecosystem (Groupe ADP) for technical advisory. Each of these international firms has credible references with comparable Gulf carriers and a clear procurement entry point with Riyadh Air’s young vendor base.
